Quick answer

What does city targeting mean for a proxy?

City targeting means asking the proxy gateway for an exit IP that belongs to a home connection in a given city, such as Bengaluru or Brisbane. With Banyan Proxies you add -city-<name> to the username, at no extra cost, from $1.88 for 1 GB. City availability varies, and websites place IPs with their own geolocation databases.

Which terms should a buyer know?

Residential IP

An address that a home internet provider, such as Jio, PLDT or Telstra, assigns to a subscriber's connection. Websites see it as an ordinary household.

City targeting

Choosing the city of the exit IP, with -city-<name> in the username. Availability depends on home devices online in that city.

City parameter

The lowercase city name in the username, with underscores for spaces: ho_chi_minh_city, kuala_lumpur.

ASN

Autonomous system number: the number of one operator's network, such as AS9299 for PLDT. ASN targeting keeps traffic on one ISP.

Rotating session

Each new connection gets an IP from the pool, usually a different one.

Sticky session

One IP kept for the time you set with -ttl-, up to 30 minutes; it can change earlier if the device goes offline.

Session ID

A label you choose, such as -session-b1, that ties requests to one sticky IP.

Geolocation database

A dataset that maps IP blocks to places. Different databases can give different cities for the same IP.

Metro area

A city and its suburbs, often spread across several administrative units, such as Delhi NCR, Metro Manila or Jabodetabek around Jakarta.

CGNAT

Carrier-grade NAT: many subscribers share one public IP. It is common on mobile networks and some fixed-wireless home services.

NBN

Australia's National Broadband Network, a wholesale network over which retail ISPs such as Telstra or Aussie Broadband sell home plans.

Local fibre company

In New Zealand, the company that built the fibre in a city, such as Enable in Christchurch or Tuatahi First Fibre in Hamilton; retail ISPs sell over it.

Dedicated 4G/5G port

A mobile modem reserved for one customer, billed per day, with IP rotation by link, API or timer. Proxy (data) access only: no SMS, no calls, and no direct access to the SIM card or the device.

Top-up

A crypto payment that credits your balance: the price of the plan you pick, never less than $25. The plan is then bought from the balance.

KYC

Know your customer: identity checks with documents or selfies. Banyan Proxies does not do KYC.

PIN code

India's six-digit postal code, such as 400001 for Fort in Mumbai. Useful to set a delivery address inside sites; not a proxy targeting option.

Where do these terms matter most?

City, metro area and geolocation database matter in every check; read how to check a proxy's city. ASN matters when results depend on the ISP; read ASN targeting. Sessions matter for multi-step tasks; read sticky sessions.

Where are these terms used?

Most appear in the city targeting syntax, the docs and the FAQ. The home page summarises the plans.
